Active Duty Military Deaths by Year and Manner 1980-2022

This is an ongoing list of active-duty military deaths in the United States since 1980. The data is compiled from various sources, including the Department of Defense, the Military Times, and the National Center for Health Statistics.

The list includes the name of the service member, their rank, their age, the date of their death, and the manner of their death. The manner of death is classified as either combat-related or non-combat-related.

Combat-related deaths include those caused by enemy action, friendly fire, or accidents while on deployment. Non-combat-related deaths include those caused by suicide, illness, accidents, or other causes.

The list is not exhaustive and may not include all active-duty military deaths. However, it provides a comprehensive overview of the number of deaths and the manner in which they occurred.

Attachment A details the number of suicide deaths by Service and Component.

The overall number of troop suicide deaths throughout the active-duty force, National Guard, and Reserves from 2001 through 2019 was 37,053.

According to Pentagon data last updated Dec. 19, 2022, there were 26 active-duty suicides in October 2022, the highest in a decade.

The Army has the highest number of active-duty suicides, followed by the Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force.
